Evangelos Averoff was a prominent politician and intellectual who left his mark on Greece in the 20th century. He was also at the origin of the development of the region of Metsovo in Epirus in the north-west of Greece and the creation of the Katogi estate in 1959. He was a convinced European and that is undoubtedly why he decided to plant the first cabernet sauvignon vineyard in Greece.
Until 1973, he made his wine in the basement of his house before a winery was built. The wine was then iconic and the sale was limited to two bottles per customer. It could only be found in two establishments, the Hotel "Grande-Bretagne" and the delicatessen of "Vassilopoulos". In 1986, the blend evolved into 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Agiorgitiko.

Today the wine is made in Nemea with only a small proportion of Metsovo Cabernet Sauvignon. It lost its iconic status to become a reputable brand with substantial volumes. The estate and the magnificent hotel attached to it are now managed by the grandson of Evangelos.
The range of wines produced is impressive and the most interesting are the Ktima Katogi (which requires around ten years of aging in the bottle), a well-crafted Roditis Chardonnay blend and a range called “Rossiu di Monte” (two varietal wines. autochthones, vlachiko and xinomavro) as well as a cabernet sauvignon which comes from vines planted at an altitude of more than 1000 meters.

The estate covers 15 hectares and Dimitris Ziannis, the estate's oenologist, produces 50,000 bottles a year.
