Fine Faugères AOP

Languedoc - France

The fine Faugères is the first regulated eau-de-vie in Languedoc and above all the only one distilled thanks to a Charentais still, called à repasse. On March 19, 1948, a decree gave it the regulated designation of origin Fine de Faugères.
In the 19th century, it was not the wine that made the reputation of Faugères, but a brandy, the Fine Faugères. It received the regulated designation in 1948 and became very popular from the first half of the 20th century. The Noël Salles distillery was for a good century, from 1852 to 1985, the fame of Faugères brandy. Reputed to be the third eau-de-vie in France, its production came to an end when the distillery closed in 1985.
In the 2000s the Fine de Faugères was reborn thanks to Mathieu Frécon, distiller, then others followed and since then, the Fine Faugères has been available again.

An architect by training, Catherine Roque was passionate about wine and in 1987 created the Domaine de Clovallon in Bédarieux (34), today taken over by her daughter Alix. In 1997, she created the Mas d'Alezon in Faugères, where she vinified seven hectares in biodynamics.

Arriving on the Faugères terroir, Catherine Roque shared the same cellar in Caussiniojouls for a while as Matthieu Frécon. The end of the winemaker's vinification corresponded to the start of the distiller's distillations. Discussions during this period led Catherine Roque to focus on the world of spirits and Fine Faugères in particular.

For Catherine Roque, the Fine Faugères represents the spirit of wine. The distillation is the extension of her work as a winegrower.

Le Mas d'Alezon produces this Fine Faugères XR from Carignan wine. While the minimum aging is set at five years, Catherine Roque ages her Fine Faugères ten years in 600-liter oak barrels (extra-reserve). This eau-de-vie reveals fine notes of raisins and garrigue on a deep base. Gorgeous !
