Te Mata

Gamay noir 2020
Hawke's Bay

Nouvelle-Zélande - Hawke's Bay

The estate is New Zealand's oldest winery, with the first vines planted in 1892.
In 1976 it was bought by John Buck, one of the most charismatic figures in the New Zealand wine industry, who set up a 20-year development programme. The vines were replanted and the current production is 25,000 cases. Today, the estate is entirely self-sufficient and no longer buys any grapes from the wine trade.
The winemaking has been under the control of Peter Cowley since 1984 and the estate has had the services of a viticultural specialist since 1994.

In 1995, Te Mata Estate introduced a superior selection of black gamay with white juice to New Zealand. This wine comes from a single vineyard, Woodthorpe Terraces.  The Woodthorpe vineyard is situated on elevated north-facing terraces in the Hawke's Bay Tutaekuri River valley. Between 1863 and 1914 it hosted the annual Woodthorpe races. Today, its ideal aspect and draining soils offer Te Mata Estate a unique location for quality grapes.

Tasting notes:

This wine has a lovely bright ruby colour, a typical "gamay primeur" palette, in a fairly modern profile. It is produced by carbonic maceration and offers a characteristic touch of red fruits, morello cherries and raspberries. The nose is precise while remaining in a simple register. The palate is immediately seductive because of its freshness and greediness. It is a jovial and greedy wine that should be served chilled.

This wine is interesting in relation to the varietal diversity that exists in this country: it is not common to find Gamay in New Zealand!

Fruity and elegant red wine.
