The Hampden distillery is specialised in rums with the highest concentrations.
The distillery is equipped with four double-twisted pot stills: the first (John Dore), with a capacity of 7,560 litres, was installed in 1960; the second (Vendôme), with a capacity of 18,900 litres, in 1994; the third (Forsyth), with a capacity of 18,900 litres, in 2010 and the last (TNT), also with a capacity of 18,900 litres, in 2016.
Slow distillations lasting around seven hours produce a rich, powerful new make that comes out of the still at 82%.
Aged in a cask with Pagos sherry, this Hampden is absolutely beautiful. With many trips back and forth between Jamaica and Andalusia, its aromatic and taste palette is deeply imbued with these two centuries-old cultures. With an extraordinary richness, it gives off sublime scents of sultanas before revealing infinitely sweet cane sugar flavours.
Tasting notes :
Nose: deep, rich. Behind a layer of varnish, the first nose reveals notes of ylang-ylang, clove, artichoke base, roasted walnut, blood orange, apricot stone and cherry brandy with exceptional presence. On aeration, almonds, salt and pepper settle on the surface of the aromatic palette. Rum and sherry wine play as equals. With time, Emeri cloth, camphor, sultanas, dates and a fine coffee liqueur guide the tasting towards Andalusia.
Palate: lively, powerful. A change of scenery at the beginning of the mouth. Indeed, cane sugar and cane honey flow freely on the palate. Tropical flower scents permeate the atmosphere. On the mid-palate, vanilla beans and cocoa beans work in perfect harmony to coat the taste buds with their subtle tannins. Camphorated and heady (geranium), the aftertaste transports us to the Hampden distillery.
Finish: long, dynamic. Strongly infused with cane sugar flavours, the beginning of the finish is refreshed by coconut milk and honeysuckle scents. On the finish, artichoke bottoms and mustard seeds compete with intensity. The aftertaste reveals notes of blond tobacco, lime blossom, peppery rose and coriander. Marked by scents of nuts, dehydrated grapes and dried straw, the empty glass takes us back to southern Spain.
