Micro Cuvée - Rue du Nil

Single Malt Whisky

Irlande

Mark Reynier, the former co-owner of Bruichladdich founded the Waterford distillery in 2015. Keen to emphasise the notion of terroir, he works closely with around 100 Irish farmers. The project has put the emphasis back on barley, at the heart of the final aroma of a single malt, through an ambitious triptych of 'Terroir, Traceability and Transparency'.

Born from the collaboration between the Irish distillery and the Parisian restaurant "Frenchie's", this micro-cuvée named "Rue du Nil" succeeds "Voyages Extraordinaires", the first exclusive bottling made by Waterford for a partner, unveiled in 2021.
Frenchie's chef/owner Gregory Marchand, head sommelier Aurélien Massé and Waterford's head distiller Ned Gahan joined forces to take on the challenge of seeking out the equivalent of the rarest and most intense wines.

Aged in three types of casks, ex-bourbon (24%), Chateau Palmer French oak (27%) and Muscatel (49%), it was made from 100% biodynamically grown barley.

Exclusive edition limited to 1,200 bottles

Tasting notes:

Unpeated.

Nose : Fresh, elegant. On the nose, notes of white fruit (pear, apple), aromatic plants (sage, verbena), vanilla and candied lemon rub shoulders with malty aromas of remarkable purity of expression. With aeration, the aromatic palette gradually reveals itself to be peppery, liquorice and honeyed (acacia). Then, taking resolutely fruity paths, it brings a basket full of Williams pears to the fore.

Palate: Lively, racy. Herbaceous (cut hay, straw) and milky (coconut, almond), the attack in the mouth is also spicy (ginger, coriander) and slightly medicinal (tiger balm). The mid-palate is harmoniously reminiscent of a green barley field. On the finish, flavours of yellow melon, white peach and almond add a fruity dimension to the palette.

Finish: Long, subtle. On the finish, notes of eucalyptus, rosemary and savory underline the empyreumatic and freshly herbal character of this Waterford. On the aftertaste, vanilla flavours (custard) stretch the tasting time to infinity, ending in a deliciously malty, fruity (pear, mirabelle plum) and floral (lily, lavender) retro olfaction. Rich in dry extracts, the empty glass reveals notes of porridge, iris concrete and red fruits (raspberry, strawberry).
